Invasive Insects are insects that have a native distribution in one part of the world and have been transported outside of their natural migratory range and have become established in a new ecosystem. Invasive insects can outcompete native insects and damage the new ecosystem they have been introduced into. An example of invasive insects covered in this Newsletter is the Strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi), which is a native pest in Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, and was first detected in British Columbia, Canada, in 2019. Scientists are now actively tracking the introduction and spread of this invasive insect.
